Nature provides plenty to see on any dive, but man has also left behind an enormous supply on things to explore underwater and most divers find wrecked ships nearly irresistible because they are intriguing to explore and to discover. Wreck diving is an exciting way to combine your passion for diving with a truly unusual view of history. The first step is learning the details of how to safely explore wreck dive sites. Each wreck dive offers a chance for discovery, potentially unlocking a mystery or spying something others have missed.

The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course is one of the most specialty courses available. It offers divers everything they need to know to expand their diving capabilities to include exploration of sunken ships.

You can sign up for the PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course if you have earned a PADI Adventure Diver certificate or higher and you are at least 15 years old.

There are many different types of wrecks, some of which are protected by laws that guard their historical and cultural significance. Your training starts by reviewing  guidelines for researching and respecting wrecks.

Beyond teaching key safety measures, this course also helps you to learn to identify interesting aspects of wrecks that might not be obvious to the untrained eye.

During the course, you will receive instruction and practical guidance that will teach you:

• Special equipment considerations for wreck diving.
• Ways to avoid common hazards associated with diving and exploring shipwrecks.
• Techniques for entering intact wrecks.
• The best methods for researching potential wreck sites.
• Safety considerations for navigating and exploring wrecks.
• Surveying and mapping a wreck.
• Using penetration lines and reels to guide exploration.
• Techniques to avoid kicking up silt or disturbing the wreck and its inhabitants.

You will need your basic diving equipment, plus a dive light to see into the wreck, a slate and an underwater compass for mapping and navigation and a line and reel for practicing wreck penetration. Your PADI instructor may suggest additional gear appropriate for wreck diving in your area.

The PADI Wreck Diver Specialty Course includes 4 open water dives. You will start off with an orientation dive which involves mapping a wreck. You will also learn proper procedures for wreck penetration while using a wreck reel. You will learn the ins and outs of responsible wreck diving. The dives are usually over 2 days and are conducted from a boat.

The manual and the certificate are not included in the price.
